Music and Additional Lyrics by Barry P. Foley © 14 Sep 2005/22 Nov 2014

Spoken:  My granddaddy was born 1890 in Kentucky
He bought this farm in ‘25 tryin' to get out of those coal mines alive
Well, he made it through the depression and even the 2nd World War
But that old coal dust caught up with him, I think back in 1954
He gave the farm to my daddy, six months before he died
Daddy did pretty good with raising four kids,.he even made a profit for a while
He struggled those last ten years, then his health finally gave way
He up and surprised me when he gave me the farm one day
Before he died, he made me promise, I’d keep it in the family name

1ST Chorus
That old tractor sits and waits for another spring
But there won’t be one this year
The soil will be left dormant no plow will touch this land
There’s so many reasons, but that old tractor won’t understand

The price of crops has dropped, too low to plant
Each year it’s gotten worse, I don’t know what to do
Because of last year's losses I can’t afford the gas
I’ll be damned if I’ll spend 3 weeks plowing away my ass

2nd Chorus
That old tractor sits and waits for another spring
But there won’t be one this year
Eighty years we’ve been here fourscore and hope for more
I promised daddy, I’d keep if for eighty more

I put solar panels on fifty acres
Bunch of windmills out spinning in the fields
Make some use of all the wind and sun
We'll save this farm, and the fight has just begun

Repeat 2nd Chorus (1st line spoken)

TAG:   " Ya know, John Deere makes one heck of
tractor, .........but they all rust after a while"
