Before that magic day, in Bristol Tennessee
Before the Singing Brakeman, or the Carter Family
Before [Earl's 3 finger roll and Bluegrass came to rule
Was a old time banjo man,by the name of Charlie Poole

Now Charlie lived down the road, in North Caroline
Made records up in New York City, in 1925
He'd raise hell and drank liquor, til he'd pass out on the floor
Ain't no great surprise, he found my Grandpa's door

Now Grandpa Boss, he loved to hunt, he loved to play a banjo too
He worked in those logging camps, the way real men used to do
He fathered eleven children, aunts and uncles of mine
Grandpa Boss might best be remembered, for his moonshine

Chorus:
When Charlie played for Grandpa "Don't Let The Deal Go Down"
Grandpa opened another jar and passed it all around
I bet they played a little poker, or just howled at the moon
Just a little family history of my Grandpa and Charlie Poole

Bridge:
The Ramblers drew great big crowds whenever they came around
Charlie sold a quarter million records before, Ralph Peer came to town
When Hollywood called wanting Charlie's banjo out California way
He drank and drank for 13 weeks, ended up in a grave

When Charlie played for Grandpa "Don't Let The Deal Go Down"
Grandpa opened another jar and passed it all around
I bet they played a little poker, or just howled at the moon
Just a little family history of my Grandpa and Charlie Poole

TAG:
I bet they played a lot poker, and they howled at the moon
A little Foley family history of my Grandpa and Charlie Poole
