ON THE ROAD WITH MERLE

I met Merle in '68, he liked me right away
He said, come on and join us on the show
I said Hag, I'm a little young, he said I'll treat you like a son
So, I grabbed my guitar, went on the road with Merle

I was there in Muskogee, when he first sang 'em Okie
My or my, how that crowd went wild
In Philadelphia, he made them proud
To wave the flag and shout out loud
Just another night, on the road with Merle

Merle taught me how to sing, and find the words that I need
To fan the flame, deep down in my soul
Said "It might tear you apart,
But it's gotta come from the heart"
Lessons learned, on the road with Merle

Hag introduced me to his friends, back where is all began,
Hanging out with Jimmie and Lefty too
Oh, Bob Wills was man, the Texas Playboys was the band
Living with the legends, road with Merle

Merle taught me how to sing, and find the words that I'd need
To tell the pain, from deep down in my soul
We knew the day would come, Hag would be in a field of stone
So we're still, On the road with Merle

TAG:  He sang right to the end, Ole Hag never gave in
So, I'm still, On the road with Merle
