Born in the hills of Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains at my door
The first thing that I can remember, was riding an old workhorse
My daddy, he bought me a pony, when I was just ten years old

Back when I was a cowboy, life was so simple back then
Riding and roping, laughing and joking
Playing with all my friends

At 15, I bought my first guitar, determined to play and sing
Oh how my life kept changing cause I thought I knew everything
At 18, I had to leave cause my hometown held nothing for me
I needed more than the factory and the sawmill,
So the Navy I did go

Back when I was a sailor, sailing the seven seas
Traveling around this big old world, oh this traveling life’s for me

That’s been 30 some years now, since I first left my home
I know my mama keeps praying for me, cause I was born to roam

Back when I was a cowboy, life was so simple back then
Riding and roping, laughing and joking
Playing with all my friends

I stole this ending from the great Tom T. Hall, goes like this... .
Do Do Do, Do Do Do, Do Do Do Do
